Alpha ESS produces both configurations of batteries: AC coupled which is better for retrofitting and DC coupled which is the ideal choice for a new installation. UPS for Blackout Protection

Another great perk of owning a solar battery? Having power to warm up a meal and watch tv during the middle of a blackout. Alpha ESS batteries come with optional blackout protection through a technology capability called ‘Uninterruptible Power Supply’ or UPS for short. With this feature, your home battery can kick in within less than 20 milliseconds when an outage happens. It is important that when you purchase a battery like this that you talk to your installers, if you want to activate it, as it is not activated automatically. This feature may not be available for every model.

What is a VPP?

VPP stands for ‘virtual power plant’. Unlike a traditional coal and fossil fuel power plant, a VPP operates through a connected network of solar batteries that users can choose to opt into. VPP members get incentives to join the network such as higher returns than solar feed-in tariffs or upfront paid cash, and the VPP operator in return can draw from this network to supplement the grid when power reaches peak demand.

Participating in a VPP isn’t mandatory to the Federal Rebate, but there are eligibility requirements that the battery you install has the capability to connect to VPPs. Alpha ESS solar batteries compatible with Amber SmartShift

Amber lists these models on their Smartshift Compatibility Checker page, however they still ask that you check the unit and system against their listed requirements.

*Inverter compatibility has limitations, according to Amber they cover: “inverter serial numbers starting with AL – please note, we’re not compatible with serial numbers beginning with ALPxxx or 9xxx.”

If you’re looking for Powerclub VPP, there’s a reason we haven’t listed them.

While this VPP may still be mentioned in older solar battery news, it is not in operation anymore. Powerclub was suspended from the National Electricity Market (NEM) by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) for failure to comply with their requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

For AlphaESS single-phase battery systems, can I connect them to a 3-phase grid?

Yes, you can. When connecting, 3-phase meters are used. These meters will ensure that the required power of the battery will be compensated on the 3 phases.

An example:

Two consumers each need 500 Watt at a certain moment and are connected to phase 1 and phase 2, for example. The battery system is connected to phase 3, and there is currently no demand for energy on that phase. The AlphaESS system then measures how much electricity is needed in total over the 3 phases at that moment (in this case 1000 Watt). This electricity is made available on phase 3 because the home battery is connected to that phase.

Because there is no consumption on phase 3 at that moment, the 1,000 Watt on phase 3 is injected into the electricity grid. At the same time, the 500 Watts needed by the users on phase 1 and on phase 2 are withdrawn from the grid. The same amount of electricity that the users need is therefore injected on phase 3 (1,000 Watts) and withdrawn on phase 1 (500 Watts) and phase 2 (500 Watts). In this case, the electricity meter is stopped, so there is no additional electricity cost.

Is there an Alpha ESS Battery Recall?

There is NO recall, listed on the ACL or anywhere, around Alpha ESS solar batteries. Where consumers are getting confused is with a similarly named solar battery product name: ‘LG’s ESS solar batteries’ that appeared on the ACL recall list. For more information about this, you can see the recall for LG batteries here.

As this is not a brand or product that we’ve been offering here at the Solar Battery Group, our customers have no need for concern.
