What’s Changed for Solar Customers in Brisbane in 2025?
A new national battery rebate called the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now being rolled out across the country. From July 1, 2025 there is now $2.3 billion dedicated to helping lower the cost of getting a solar battery installation cheaper for all Australians. This is around a 30% reduction on a solar battery.
How Much Can I Really Expect Back From The Rebate?
The real total amount is subject to location (and the unit/system), as the rebate will be delivered via STCs through the small-scale renewable energy scheme. Brisbane is in Zone 3, and receives around ~5.2 kWh/m² per day. This means there’s lots of sunshine to generate and store solar, and take advantage of some sizable upfront reductions.
Solar Self Consumption is Now the Best Way to Save
Feed-in tariffs (the prices energy companies pay you for excess solar you send to the grid) has been going down for years, and the price of power in South East Queensland has been going up. So peak low-sunlight periods where there is more demand on the grid, can leave you still needing to pay more on your bill. Less for power, but more for theirs. It’s frustrating, but it’s also the reason why solar batteries have been on the radar by different sustainable organisations and the Federal Government, when it comes to improving energy prices, stability and sustainability for everyone. And it’s why this is the new big push for 2025.
Now’s a great time to take the dive if you have been waiting on the shorelines for the price for batteries to reduce for years.
However, it’s not going to be here forever. It’s capped to $2.3 billion, and the value of each rebate will decrease in amount each year, as Australia gets closer to the 2030 year deadline. So if you’re interested, don’t leave it on the side for too long.

Now, solar installers don’t need to touch your current PV set up. Solar batteries that are AC coupled, all-in-one or have an in-built inverter allows these types of batteries to just be added on.
If you do already have a hybrid solar inverter installed, in case you ever wanted to expand into solar storage, you’ll also have the option of a DC-coupled solar battery installation, which is usually cheaper.

Why All Our Solar Batteries are Cobalt Free
Cobalt is a key material in many traditional lithium-ion batteries, but it comes with two major downsides: ethical sourcing issues and chemical instability.
First, a large portion of the world’s cobalt is mined under unsafe and exploitative conditions, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These mines often rely on child labour and dangerous, unregulated work environments. By choosing a cobalt-free battery—like one with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄ or LFP) chemistry—you’re opting for a battery that’s more ethically sourced and socially responsible.
Second, from a safety standpoint, cobalt-based batteries like NMC can be more prone to overheating or catching fire if damaged, poorly made, or exposed to high temperatures. That’s because cobalt increases a battery’s energy density—but at the cost of thermal stability.
LFP batteries don’t use cobalt at all. Instead, they rely on iron phosphate, which is more stable, less flammable, and more abundant. This makes them better suited to warm climates like Brisbane’s, and more reliable over time.
In short: cobalt-free means safer, more sustainable, and more ethically produced.
For these reasons, all the solar batteries we offer at Solar Battery Group are cobalt free.

AVERAGE PAYBACK PERIOD ON SOLAR BATTERIES IN BRISBANE
‘What’s a payback period?’ We hear you asking.
Payback is the amount of time it takes to get back the same amount you spend on your investment, like a solar battery.
After the Federal rebate, the average payback period for a standard solar battery in Brisbane has dropped down from 8 – 10 years, to about 7-9 in most cases.
How to Compare Different Solar Battery Features
-
Built-in Inverter
Batteries with a built-in inverter are particularly suitable for retrofitting into existing solar systems because they eliminate the need for a separate hybrid inverter—saving both money and installation complexity. These integrated units handle the full DC-to-AC conversion internally, so your current inverter and wiring remain intact, avoiding the cost and labor of replacing or upgrading to a hybrid system. As a result, installation is quicker, more budget-friendly, and less disruptive. For Brisbane homeowners, this plug-and-play aspect means you can enhance your solar setup seamlessly—no major rewiring or extra hardware required—to bring battery storage online with minimal hassle.
-
UPS (Blackout Protection)
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) functionality means your solar battery can detect a grid outage and automatically switch to battery power without delay. This is especially important in areas prone to blackouts or storm-related disruptions—something Brisbane experiences during summer storm seasons. A battery with UPS ensures your essential appliances—such as lighting, internet routers, refrigeration, and even medical devices—stay powered during an outage. Not all batteries include this feature by default, so if blackout protection is a priority for your household, it’s worth confirming that your chosen model includes automatic switching and a fast response time, typically under 20 milliseconds.
-
LFP / LiFePO₄ (Lithium Iron Phosphate) – Cobalt Free
LiFePO₄ (or LFP) batteries represent a newer, more advanced form of lithium-ion technology that is cobalt-free and highly stable. Unlike traditional lithium-ion chemistries, LFP offers enhanced safety due to its greater thermal stability, significantly reducing the risk of overheating or combustion. These batteries also tend to last longer, with many models rated for over 6,000 charge cycles, and can tolerate deeper discharges without compromising performance. For Brisbane homes where high temperatures are common, LFP chemistry provides peace of mind and reliable performance. Additionally, the absence of cobalt makes them a more sustainable and ethically sourced choice.
-
Modular Design
A modular battery system is built with scalability in mind. Instead of committing to a large upfront investment, you can start with a smaller battery and add more capacity later by integrating additional modules. This is ideal for growing households or those planning to expand their solar panel array in the future. It also simplifies servicing, since individual modules can be replaced without taking the entire system offline. Modular batteries give homeowners the flexibility to adapt their energy storage to changing needs—whether due to increased consumption, the addition of electric vehicles, or changes in work-from-home routines.
-
IP Ratings for Indoor and Outdoor Use
The IP (Ingress Protection) rating of a solar battery tells you how well it’s protected against environmental elements such as dust, rain, and humidity. Brisbane’s climate includes periods of high rainfall and summer humidity, making this an important factor. An IP65 rating or higher is typically required for outdoor installation, ensuring the unit can withstand direct exposure to weather without compromising performance or safety. Batteries with lower IP ratings may need to be installed indoors or under cover, which can restrict placement and require additional planning. Always check the IP rating if you want installation flexibility or plan to mount the battery externally on a garage or exterior wall.
-
AC Coupling
AC-coupled batteries connect to your solar system on the alternating current side, which means they use their own inverter to communicate with your existing solar inverter. This setup is highly compatible with most grid-tied solar systems already installed in Brisbane homes and doesn’t require replacing your current inverter. It’s an ideal choice for retrofitting a battery onto an existing system. However, energy must be converted twice—once from DC to AC by the solar inverter, and again back to DC for storage in the battery—so there is a small efficiency trade-off. Nonetheless, AC coupling is reliable, widely supported, and often easier to install.
-
DC Coupling
DC-coupled batteries connect directly to the solar panels before the energy is converted by an inverter. This allows solar energy to be stored in the battery without first being converted to AC, which reduces conversion losses and improves overall system efficiency. DC coupling is generally recommended for new solar and battery installations because it can be configured using a hybrid inverter that manages both power flows seamlessly. This approach is typically more efficient and can better support high energy consumption, especially when paired with time-of-use tariffs or energy monitoring systems. If you’re starting fresh with a new solar-plus-storage setup, DC coupling is often the more integrated and cost-effective option.
What are the Caveats for Solar Battery Eligibility for the Federal Rebate?
- A single battery with a nominal total capacity of 5kWh – 100KWh (however the rebate amount will only apply to the first 50kWh).
- The existing solar PV system must meet safety requirements, including VPP capability.
- The matter must be installed with a new or existing solar PV system.
- The solar battery must be on the CEC Approved Battery List.
- The solar battery must be installed (or the installation must be supervised) by a SAA or CEC accredited battery installer
The solar battery is considered installed once a certificate of compliance or equivalent is signed and produced.

What’s Next? Here’s More Tips to Help You Save
Installing a solar battery is a major step toward lowering your energy bills, but how you use that battery can make an even bigger difference. Here are some proven ways to stretch your solar savings further, reduce your grid reliance, and get more value from your system over time.
Compare and Consider Joining a VPP
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) lets you join a network of homes that share stored battery energy back to the grid during times of high demand. In return, you may receive credits, rebates, or special feed-in rates. However, keep in mind that joining a VPP can come with trade-offs. Your energy provider may control when and how much of your stored energy is discharged, which could affect your ability to use your battery exactly how you want—particularly during blackouts or high-usage periods at home. Still, for many households, the financial benefits can outweigh these limitations. It’s worth comparing offers and reading the fine print before opting in.
Use Your Solar Battery’s Smart Energy App
Every solar battery supplied by Solar Battery Group comes with a built-in smart energy monitoring app, accessible via mobile or desktop. These apps give you real-time insights into your battery’s charge level, your solar production, and how much electricity your household is using. You can easily track daily trends, pinpoint when your energy use is highest, and adjust habits accordingly.
Some apps even allow you to fine-tune your battery’s behaviour—such as scheduling when to charge from the grid during off-peak times or setting preferences to prioritise solar charging. This level of visibility and control helps you make smarter energy decisions day to day. The more actively you monitor and manage your battery through the app, the more you can maximise savings and get the most out of your investment.
Consider Installing a Home Energy Management System (HEMS)
A Home Energy Management System (HEMS) works alongside your solar battery and smart appliances to coordinate when and how electricity is used throughout your home. For example, it can automatically run your dishwasher or washing machine when solar production is high, or optimise heating and cooling to avoid peak rates. HEMS solutions are especially useful if you have multiple energy-smart devices and want to streamline them into one easy-to-manage system. While not essential, this technology can significantly reduce energy waste and boost return on investment over time.
Withdraw Solar Energy During Low-Light Times
Your solar battery shines when your panels don’t – literally. By drawing stored energy during the evening or on overcast days, you reduce your dependence on expensive grid electricity during peak demand hours. This is especially helpful in winter or during Brisbane’s stormy months, when solar generation may dip but household consumption stays high. Make sure your system is configured to prioritise self-consumption before sending excess energy to the grid.
Charge Your Solar Battery on Off-Peak Grid Power
If your solar battery supports it, you may be able to top up your battery using off-peak grid electricity, typically late at night or early in the morning when demand (and pricing) is lowest. This strategy helps you minimise energy costs during cloudy days or times when your panels don’t fully recharge your battery. However, to qualify for the Federal Solar Battery Rebate, your battery must still be connected to an active solar system. Even so, charging from the grid can be a smart supplement, allowing you to sidestep peak pricing and maintain stable supply.
Use High-Efficiency Appliances
Your energy storage is only as effective as the appliances it powers. By upgrading to high-efficiency models—especially for heating, cooling, laundry, and refrigeration—you reduce overall consumption, which means your battery lasts longer between charges. Over time, this improves your energy independence and extends the lifespan of your battery system. Look for appliances with high energy star ratings, and when possible, run them during peak solar hours to maximise direct use.
